ERC Information Session May 23 2025
On May 23rd 2025, an information session about ERC Starting, Consolidator and Advanced grants for mathematicians was held at the VU. The goal of the meeting was to share recent experiences with obtaining ERC grants.
The meeting started with a presentation by Stéphanie van der Pas, describing what to prepare for an ERC proposal and discussing success rates. Then, three recent laureates shared their experiences. David Holmes (Consolidator Grant), Jan Vonk (Starting Grant) and Johannes Schmidt-Hieber (Consolidator Grant) discussed how they prepared, what they believe helps make a proposal successful, what doubts they had, and how ERC proposals are different from e.g. NWO Vidi proposals.
The program:
13.30-14.00: coffee/tea
14.00-14.30: introduction by Stéphanie van der Pas
14.30-15.00: David Holmes (Consolidator Grant laureate)
15.00-15.30: break
15.30-16.00: Jan Vonk (Starting Grant laureate)
16.00-16.30: Johannes Schmidt-Hieber (Consolidator Grant laureate)
16.30-18.00: drinks

Information session ERC Grants November 2023
On November 27, there was a meeting to provide detailed information about ERC grants. The meeting was held at the CWI, in the Turingzaal of the Congress Centre. This meeting is organized jointly by PWN, the committee Research of PWN and the Tafel Wiskunde of NWO Science, as they feel that the number of ERC proposals granted to mathematicians in The Netherlands could be increased. There were in-depth discussions on how this can be achieved.
The meeting started with a presentation by Joan Vazquez Molina of the Brussels ERC Office, section mathematics. He provided an overview of the grant schemes and the evaluation flow, which should help understand how to write a competitive proposal. He also shared statistics relevant to Dutch mathematicians.
Next, five excellent scientists [at the early, mid, and advanced career level] shared their experiences in what it takes to write a successful ERC proposal. Confirmed speakers were Arjen Doelman, Martijn Kool, Stéphanie van der Pas, Lenny Taelman and Ronald de Wolf.
The programme:
1200-1300: lunch
1300-1310: opening
1310-1335: Joan Vazquez Molina (ERC Office, Brussels)
1335-1400: Ronald de Wolf (CWI and UvA, ERC CoG awardee and ERC panel member)
1400-1425: Arjen Doelman (Leiden University, ERC Synergy grant awardee)
1425-1500: tea break
1500-1525: Stephanie van der Pas (VUMc, ERC Starting grant awardee)
1525-1550: Martijn Kool (UU, ERC consolidator grant awardee)
1550-1615: Lenny Taelman (UvA, ERC consolidator grant awardee)
1615-1730: Bert Zwart (CWI) closing discussion, followed by drinks and snacks

Information sessions ERC projects March 2022
The Research Committee of Platform Mathematics Netherlands has organized, in close collaboration with Yellow Research (https://www.yellowresearch.nl/), a number of online meetings to inform mathematicians in the Netherlands about the possibilities regarding European projects in the programmes of the European Research Council (ERC). In these programmes, research has a central place and the funds made available are very suitable for appointing PhD students.
The first meeting is held on March 24, giving an overview of the opportunities for mathematicians within the ERC programme and what is needed to prepare a successful proposal. March 29, after the information has been digested, a Q&A session has been organized during which questions could be asked and successful applicants were present. Similar sessions will be held in April for the MSCA programme.
Here you can download the information whish is sent to the participants before the meeting of March 24.

Information session MSCA projects june 2022
The Research Committee of Platform Mathematics Netherlands organised in June, in close collaboration with Yellow Research (https://www.yellowresearch.nl/) an online meeting to inform mathematicians in The Netherlands about the possibilities regarding European projects in the programmes of the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). This meeting took place on June 16, giving an overview of the opportunities for mathematicians within the MSCA programme and what is needed to prepare a successful proposal, and a Q&A session.
